Ahead of the signing of a US-Iranian memorandum of understanding scheduled for Friday in Geneva, G7 leaders will meet in Evian on Monday to discuss “the implications of this agreement, support for Lebanon, the long-term reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, of course, the conclusion of an agreement on Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs,” according to French President Emmanuel Macron. European powers ready to lift Iran sanctions after US–Iran agreement

The United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy said they were prepared to lift sanctions imposed on Iran, according to a joint statement on Sunday, welcoming an agreement reached between Washington and Tehran to end the war in the Middle East.

“We are prepared to lift relevant sanctions in response to clear, verifiable steps by Iran on its nuclear programme. We will work intensively with the US, Iran and regional partners to seize this moment, maintain momentum and achieve a long-term diplomatic settlement,” the joint statement read.

“Iran must never acquire a nuclear weapon. We stand ready to work with the US, Iran and the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) to this end.”

Yesterday’s key developments:

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said early on Monday that the US and Iran have agreed to a memorandum of understanding to be signed in Switzerland on June 19, with both sides declaring “the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon.”

• The United States agreed to release $12 billion in frozen assets to Iran before the start of negotiations.

• The Israeli military continued to strike the southern suburbs of Beirut, claiming to have killed a senior Hezbollah militant, earning backlash as the US and Iran worked towards an agreement.
