Ivory Coast beat Ecuador (1-0) in their opening World Cup match, thanks to a goal from Amad Diallo. This is Ivory Coast’s first World Cup victory since 2014.

Germany got off to a flying start against Curaçao (7-1). The Netherlands and Japan played out a spectacular draw (2-2). In Formula 1, Lewis Hamilton secured his first victory in two years. In rugby, Stade Français qualified for the Top 14 semi-finals. Paris Basket won Game 1 of the Betclic Elite finals. Paul Seixas withdrew from the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, which was won by Isaac del Toro.
