World Cup 2026: Cape Verde fight back to earn second draw against Uruguay
Newcomers Cape Verde fought back against two-time champions Uruguay in a 2-2 draw to clinch a second point at their maiden World Cup and maintain their unbeaten run, just days after causing the first shock of the tournament by holding favourites Spain to a goalless stalemate.

Cape Verde fought back to earn a 2-2 draw with Uruguay in World Cup Group H on Sunday as the African archipelago maintained their stunning unbeaten start at the global showpiece.
The debutants took the lead in Miami against the two-time former winners when Kevin Pina rifled in their first-ever World Cup goal before Uruguay hit back on the stroke of half-time to lead through Maximiliano Araujo and Agustin Canobbio.
But Cape Verdean Helio Varela netted just after the hour to ensure the spoils were shared in the tightly-contested pool.
