‘Putting the country I love first’: Starmer delivers emotional resignation speech

Less than two years after he won a landslide election victory that promised to end chaos in British politics, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation in an emotional address outside 10 Downing Street.

The threat to Starmer, which had been building for months, increased sharply on Friday when Andy Burnham, the Greater Manchester mayor, decisively won a local by-election, beating a candidate from Nigel Farage’s far-right Reform UK party, which has led national opinion polls for more than a year.

“The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election, I have heard the answer of my ‌parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace,” Starmer said.

“Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country I love first. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party,” Starmer continued as he choked up in an emotional speech outside the iconic British prime ministerial residence.

Starmer said the process of picking a new Labour Party leader would be launched in July and he would remain as prime minister until his successor is chosen, to be in place in September.
