France defeated Iraq 3-0 in Philadelphia to mathematically secure their passage to the knockout stages. Kylian Mbappé scored twice and Ousmane Dembélé added a third, but the match was overshadowed by severe thunderstorms that forced a two hour and 12-minute delay, evacuation of spectators, and a complete washout of the pitch.

France defeated Iraq 3-0 in Philadelphia to mathematically secure their passage to the Round of 32 on Monday. The match got underway in Arlington but was halted after just 45 minutes with France leading 1-0 through Mbappé’s clinical finish in the 38th minute.

Spectacular thunderstorms, heavy downpour and lightning strikes forced safety protocols into effect, with stadium officials repeatedly extending the delay as dangerous weather battered Philadelphia.

When the second half eventually got underway, France immediately continued where they left off. Mbappé doubled his tally with a clinical close-range finish set up by Dembélé, and the winger then added a third himself from Olise’s perfect pass. Iraq, visibly affected by the extended delay and France’s relentless attacking play, barely touched the ball in the second period. The Lions were completely dominated, unable to create any meaningful opportunities as the Bleus controlled possession and dictated the tempo throughout.

The victory represents a dominant statement of intent from Didier Deschamps‘ defending champions, who have now qualified for the Round of 32 with a game to spare. Mbappé’s brace continues his impressive tournament run, while the performance, despite the chaotic circumstances, underlined France’s credentials as serious World Cup contenders.
