World Cup 2026: Salah’s Egypt beat Australia in penalty shootout to reach last 16

Mohamed Salah scored with a panenka as Egypt beat Australia 4-2 on penalties to clinch their first win in a World Cup knockout match, after their round of 32 match finished even at 1-1. They will face either Argentina or Cape Verde in the last 16.

Hossam Abdelmaguid tucked away ‌the winning penalty for Egypt after Australia, still chasing a first World Cup knockout win, missed ⁠two.

Earlier, Emam Ashour scored in the 13th minute for Egypt, before teammate Mohamed Hany became the first player with two own-goals in the same World Cup tournament, allowing Australia to even the score at 1-1.
